Cleaning Trim, Window Sills and Doors

What I’m about to show you is so bad that it really doesn’t even need that much of an intro.  I’ll tell you one thing: there was a chore in my house that was way, WAY overdue.  Like, so far past due that this was happening… DSC_1879and this.. DSC_1877 Really bad, right?  That’s just not ok.  And it’s not just the doors that are housing this stuff, it’s the white trim too. DSC_1880 Friends, don’t be like me.  Don’t let your home get to this state.  Eh!  Don’t get me wrong, I knew this stuff needed to be cleaned.  But when you look at this everyday, it’s almost as if you create a shield that blocks the hideous dirt from your vision.  Great at the time, not so great when you actually put on your big girl pants and take a good look around.  And it’s not just the dirt that lands in the little crevices.  There’s also dirt on the doors from grimey little fingers. Electric box, be gone!

Ok, how many of you have a super annoying, in-your-face electric box right smack in the middle of the entryway to your home?  Hopefully, not many of you!  I mean, come on, right here, that big, really?DSC_1670

Before this stylin’ gal came into this home, there was a pretty little calendar “covering” the electrical box.  What do you think, do you notice it?DSC_1673

How about now?DSC_1672

Oh, you mean the fact that the bottom of the calendar sticks out about 5 inches due to the bulkiness of it is giving it away?  DARN!  Eh, men.

For quite a while now, I’ve been on the lookout for a painting that would cover the box completely.  Well, I was having trouble finding the right piece.  So, I thought about what I really wanted to see on the wall and put my brain to work.  Enter, the cutest little nugget:

Bookshelf Makeover, Baby!

DSC_1578 Finally.  FINALLY, the spare bedroom is starting to come together and not look like such a disorganized mess.  I pride myself in being a very neat person, but this was kind of like my Monica closet (except, well, room).  Between the wedding decorations that I still need to part way with (I’m sorry, but it’s tough!), the gifts, and any miscellaneous items we’d pick up and throw in there “just for the time being”, it was starting to get a bit outrageous.

What’s the best way to organize in such a small space?  Shelving!  Baskets!  A clean-freak’s best friend.  What’s even better is that this bookshelf was FREE!  Our old roommate left it behind and I was a bit skeptical at first.  It’s big, clunky, blah, but it’s functional.  It just needed a little facelift.  And here’s how this hefty guy has put us on the right track to a clean, happy room…

It all started with this… DSC_1529 Continue reading

Homemade Vanilla Extract

DSC_1573

Ok, so I don’t know about you, but I LOVE giving gifts.  I’m talking about the kind of gift that you give because a person is special to you and it makes you happy to see them happy.  You know what I’m talking about?  Like when my hubs brought me home flowers for, oh wait, no reason :)

Some of my favorite kinds of gifts to give are those that bring out the inner Martha in me.  It just makes it that much more special.  And one thing that I’ve been kickin’ myself to try is homemade vanilla extract.  Oh man, just hearing those words makes me all warm inside.  Nothing better than seeing little specks of deliciousness just hanging out and infusing their flavor into your cookie dough.  Makes your sweets that.much.better.  And the best part is that it’s super easy, I promise.
